Monaco To Take On Andujar

Gabriela Sabatini’s countryman, Juan Monaco, is going to take on the Spanish player Pablo Andujar in the title round match of the ongoing Swiss Open. It’s the first occasion that these two players would go head-to-head against each other.

Monaco had had a bit of a struggle in the Round of 4 against Robin Haase of Holland who is placed above him in the world rankings. He had been broken early in the first and the second set in that match. But, he battled through it and eventually won to reach the final.

Later on in the post match interview, Monaco had admitted that it was more because of nervousness that he made mistakes at the start of both the sets.

Monaco has been in the final of 18 ATP events before out of which he has won 8. So, his record in the finals is not that bad. That conversion rate can still be better though, but, since he has tasted success in the title round of the tournaments before, he would be fairly confident against Andujar.

As far as Andujar is concerned, he has made his way to the finals of any event after a gap of two years. So, he would surely be slightly nervous. He had a comfortable win in the semis, but, that was against an out of form Fernando Verdasco. In the final match, he will be locking horns with a player who is in great rhythm and thus, he will have to play much better.

The Spaniard has a couple of titles under his belt, but, as written above, he has not seen glory for a long time and thus, would be a little short on confidence entering tomorrow’s match.

Andujar’s world ranking is 44 at the moment.

Petra Kvitova faces defeat against Svetlana Kuznetsova- slips down from last 16

Svetlana Kuznetsova bagged a position in the final sixteen of the French Open after beating Petra Kbitova. The score post the face off was 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 9-7, while the tournament lost its 5 top seeds. Talking about her win Kuznetsova commented that she is extremely happy about entering in the top 16 players of the season.  This three hour thirteen minutes match, the longest one in women’s section, Kuznetsova the 2009 winner took maximum advantage of the Kvitova’s unforced errors and double faults and hence set up a 4th round clash against Lucie Safarova, a Czech national.

Kvitova was a former champion of Wimbledon and back in the year 2012 was a semi finalist. She enjoyed a career edge of 3-0 over the ace Russian, and stepped into the clash on Saturday. However her efforts were weakened by medical timeouts she needed for treating her back injury, twice.  2 match points were saved in 12th decider game, nevertheless her inconsistent game play made her fail in the third set.

This season is Kuznetsova’s 12th consecutive season of the French Open, where she is going to next face off Safarova, Kvitova’s teammate in the Fed Cup. Safarova put out Ana Ivanovic, the 11th seed and also the champion of 2008 with a score of 6-3, 6-3. This was Ivanovic’s 5th consecutive defeat against Safarova as the latter booked a spot in the final 16 of French Open, for the 1st time after 2007.

Simona Halep, the 4th seed also made it through the final sixteen of French Open. Maria Torro-Flor of Spain was brushed aside by the 22 year old with the score of 6-3, 6-0 as she next takes on Sloane Stephens, the 15th seed. In all 3 rounds in Paris, Halep has lost a total of 11 games.

Julio Iglesias Has Never Met Kournikova

Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias have been in a relationship since more than a decade, but, the latter’s father who is also a renowned personality is yet to meet the former.

Yes, you read that right. Julio Iglesias, the Spanish singer, has never ever interacted with Kournikova face to face. He revealed that in one of his interviews last week.

Talking to a Spanish newspaper, Julio said, “Yes, there is 100% truth in the stories that I have never had a meeting with Anna. I can’t find any specific reason behind it. It might be because of the fact that I spend a lot of time travelling and Enrique is also a superstar who remains busy in his own commitments, but, I had a chat with him on this topic and I congratulated him.”

Julio who is 70 years of age at the moment has no hesitation in admitting that neither of his sons seeks his advice.

The singer/songwriter said, “You know as a father you always have that urge to sit with your son and have discussion about his career and things like that, but, when your son is as capable and talented as Enrique is, you don’t need to advice him anything.”

All of Julio’s sons are famous people and they rarely visit him. But, that doesn’t bother Julio at all. Having gone through a similar phase during his life, he understands his sons’ professional compulsion. But, he hopes that when he gets a little older, his sons start visiting him regularly.

Julio who has been active in the field of music since 1968 has released albums in various languages and most of them have been super hits. He still attracts huge crowd whenever he performs. His next show is going to be in London.
